National Carillon

National Carillon Canberra - ACT Landmarks

Landmark: National Carillon
Address: Lake Burley Griffin, Aspen Island, 2600, ACT

The National Carillon Tower was a gift to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Capital from the British Government to the people of Australia. It is hard to miss as it stands tall and proud on Aspen Island, Lake Burley Griffin. The National Carillon is large by world standards with 55 bronze bells and are said to be first-class specimens of the art of bellfounding.

The best place to listen to the National Carillon is generally within a radius of one hundred metres and most beneficial with an uninterrupted view of the tower where audiences can lend their ears to compositions specifically written for the Carillon to other song arrangements both popular and improvised.

The National Carillon can be heard throughout the year to celebrate national days and is played in addition to other events like Australia Day, with local and visiting carillonists playing on these occasions.
