Myall Coast

Myall Coast - Mid North Coast - New South Wales

The Myall Coast on the Mid North Coast of NSW, New South Wales is the gateway to the twin towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, at the mouth of the Myall River. These peaceful twin towns combine to provide a setting for a holiday where keeping it natural is the key.

Explore the Myall Lakes National Park or relax and fish on Jimmys Beach which is the north side of Port Stephens. Venture onto Bennetts Beach or head south and trek up Yacaaba Headland, the views at the top are worth the walk. Houseboat, dinghy and bicycle hire will get you moving while a walk on the beach can be rewarded by dolphins frolicking in the surf did you know that the Myall Coast is home to more dolphins than anywhere else in NSW! Whales play in the sea just off the coast during their twice-yearly migration.

70kms north the Myall Coast is bounded by Seal Rocks and here divers are also in paradise with plenty of fish life in the favourite dive spots of the area including grey nurse sharks who rare their young in the underwater caverns beneath Sugarloaf Point Headland. Here you will find the Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse erected in 1875. A short 10 minute walk to the Lighthouse will take you past an impressive coastline and blowhole.

Naturally water is the main focus for the region. Within the Myall Lake system popular activities include sailing, fishing, canoeing, sailboarding, windsurfing and skiing, whilst excellent surfing and beach fishing spots abound along the 40km stretch of beach. For the surfer both Treachery Beach and Cellito Beach is a must, the north east blows off shore producing clean and favourable surfing conditions throughout the summer. The diving is first class with spectacular ocean dive spots at Broughton Island, Big Rock and Little Rock south east of Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse.

A series of walking tracks have been developed including the Mungo Brush Rainforest Walk and the Tamboi Board Walk. There are beach access roads for 4WDs however vehicles are not permitted past the big gibber (National Park pass required) Do not forget to check out the Giant Sand Dunes at the Little Gibber (also known as Dark Point) 8kms south of Mungo Brush.

Things to do on the Myall Coast:

Myall Lakes National Park is a walkers paradise from coastal beach to inland river and lakes, sightings of many sea and land birds are common on these walks.

Surf down the giant sand dunes at Dark Point.

Yacaaba headland is a volcanic peak part of the Myall Lakes experience. Pack a drink and something to eat and head off for a moderate graded walk. The headland is abundant in wildlife including dingoes, black cockatoos, goannas, koalas and a great viewing area to see dolphins.

In a depth of 132ft of water the S.S.Satara, (out off Treachery Beach) is the east coasts largest diveable wreck.

A big variety of fish are out there to be caught, go deep sea fishing with experienced charter boats so go for the big one and take something home to brag about.

Take a day trip to Broughton Island and get into some of the best snorkelling in NSW. It is also possible to camp on Broughton Island (contact Myall Lakes National Parks for details).
