Tennant Creek

Tennant Creek - Barkly Region - Northern Territory

From cattle kings to golden bling, this town has seen it all, steeped in Aboriginal culture and such a rush in gold mining that earned the town of Tennant Creek its name of 'the Territory's heart of gold.' Sift through gold mining artefacts and memorabilia at the Tuxworth-Fullwood museum, take an underground tour of the last operating ten-head gold stamp battery at the the Battery Hill Mining Centre and visit the Telegraph Station that connected the isolated outback to the rest of the world.

Indulge in a refreshing swim at Lake Mary Ann and maybe even a picnic at the shady reserve after a picturesque walk through the Honeymoon Ranges. The women's dancing site at The Pebbles is a stunning granite formation located to the north of town and considered sacred to the Warumungu people. The township has much to offer the weary traveller in the way of services and a visit to the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre is a must as it is considered to be one of the best in the Territory.
