Burra - Clare Valley - South Australia

The origins of Burra township began with the discovery of copper in 1845 when a number of townships popped up according to the miners' country of origin, making it the second largest settlement in South Australia. That being said, the miners soon headed for the Victorian Goldfields with the promise of riches and the town of Burra became a service centre for a substantial pastoral and agricultural area. The consequences could have seen the town come to an abrupt end, however the community attended to its preservation of rich heritage resulting in Burra being proclaimed a State Heritage Area in 1993 and is also listed on the National Estate Register.

Located 156 kilometres north of Adelaide and you can pick up your own 'key' to uncovering the history of South Australia's copper central. Burra Visitor Information Centre offers visitors a unique way to explore the towns heritage using Burra's Heritage Passport Trail complete with your own guidebook and key to unlock this fascinating town's best stories. Upgrade your Heritage Passport and it will also get you into the three town's museums.

Visit Market Square, opposite the Visitor centre and see why it took three months and 40 bullocks to haul the Burra Jinker, 100 miles to Adelaide. Take a guided tour of the Bon Accord Mine Complex and visit the beautifully restored Cornish miners cottage, Malowen Lowarth Cottage. There are antique shops, art gallery and relaxing picnic areas with plenty of accommodation options.
