Clare

Clare - Clare Valley - South Australia

The 'Garden of the North' is how the town of Clare is known and is situated 136 km north of Adelaide. This historic town forms part of the backbone of the Clare Valley region along with other Clare Valley towns and villages. Clare thrives as the main business centre for the region boasting a rich agricultural history after Edward John Eyre gave it his stamp of approval in the mid 1800's. The Sevenhill cellars are still run by Jesuit brothers after the initial vines were planted by Jesuit priests in 1851 confirming its status as the oldest wines and vines in the region. Visitors should also head to the monastery buildings and the St Aloysius Church.

Clare hosts some fantastic events with the Spanish Festival in April, Clare Gourmet Weekend in May, Clare Show in October and horseracing at Easter. For something a little different back a winner at the Clare Races as the vines become a stunning setting for a day at the races.

Pick up a brochure from the Visitors Centre and step out on a self-guided trail for the Town Walk and take in the sights. The Old Police Station Museum is a National Trust Museum having once been a prison, a hospital and housing for government employees.

Clare offers a fantastic range of accommodation and dining options for its visitors and in particular, wine connoisseurs will appreciate the fact that they are in Australia's best region for riesling.
