Kapunda

Kapunda - Clare Valley - South Australia

Located amidst the Barossa Valley and the Clare Valley, Kapunda is situated 77 kilometres north of Adeliade. Putting the wine aside for a moment, this quaint town is the origin of Australia's coppermining industry where sheep farmer Dutton and his partner Bagot purchased surrounding land, built the town and announced their discovery of copper-ore which apparently rescued the state from certain ruin. Walk in the footsteps of pioneers on a 10 kilometre journey past old miners cottages, open cuts, tunnels and finally to the old mining site. However, Kapunda's past doesn't stop there, after the mines were closed Sir Sidney Kidman ventured into the area and over time he was the authority for 26 million hectares, landing him the reputation as 'Cattle King' for more than 40 years.

For a comprehensive insight into the town's mining history a visit to the spellbinding Kapunda Museum is a must. This fabulous two-storey folk museum is considered as Australia's finest where visitors are treated to a detailed account of events including displays of agricultural machinery and an original fire engine including an interpretive display of Bagot's fortune.

The 8 metre bronze statue situated at the end of the main street pays tribute to early immigrant miners and for a birds eye view of Kapunda and the surrounding countryside, head to Gundry's Lookout. The town also plays host to some great events, the Farm Fair, Celtic Music Festival and Kapunda Show. There is accommodation in town and a chance to grab some pub grub at the Wheatsheaf Pub.
