Lake Eyre

Lake Eyre Roxby Downs - SA Landmarks

Landmark: Lake Eyre
Address: Oodnadatta Track, Andamooka, 5722, SA

Lake Eyre is a unique oasis in the harsh South Australian outback with an air of infinite peace filtering through the atmosphere when it is dry and the vibrancy of prolific wildlife when it is full.

It is the lowest point in Australia at 15 metres below sea level and on the rare occasions that it fills, this visually spectacular rarity attracts visitors from around the country to witness the display. When Lake Eyre is full it is the largest lake in Australia and the 18th largest lake in the world where water stretches as far as the eye can see and wildlife breeze in to take advantage of this expansive stretch of water in the middle of the desert.

Experience Lake Eyre from the sky and watch the shimmer of crystals when it is dry as the giant salt pan glistens in the sun or the calm waters providing a haven for wildlife as visitors enjoy the lake by boat.

Located 700 kilometres north of Adelaide, Lake Eyre is part of the Lake Eyre National Park providing bush camping for visitors at Halligan Point Campground, no facilities, and campgrounds with facilities at Mullorina Station, outside the park. Alternatively, the William Creek Hotel, halfway along the Oodnadatta Track, offers a roof over visitors heads and great pub food.
