St Helens

St Helens - East Coast - Tasmania

St Helens overlooks picturesque Georges Bay and is the largest town on the north-east coast of Tasmania. No wonder visitors are attracted to this fishing town with its year round mild sunny weather, bountiful waters and idyllic beaches. The town is well known for its fantastic sport fishing, affording it the reputation as the game fishing capital of Tassie celebrating this title with the St Helens Game Fishing Classic each year in March. Fishing opportunities are plentiful with keen anglers having the opportunity to cast a line in the East Australian Current and haul in marlin, tuna and shark, the estuary of Georges Bay for land lubbers, trout and bream in the Scamander River or hire a dinghy and fish the bay.

Delve in to the magical depths of the sea to discover underwater caves and kelp forests, popular amongst the diving community. Browse through memorabilia at St Helens History Room and visit the historic Fair Lee house and take a trek past deserted beaches in the nearby Bay of Fires. Time your visit to coincide with one of the towns planned events, the Tasmanian Sand Enduro at Peron Dunes in Nov and the St Helens Regatta and Woodchopping Festival in January. Relax at one of the towns cafes or restaurants and take advantage of the towns range of accommodation and really make your stay a memorable one.
