Launceston

Launceston - Launceston Region - Tasmania

Australia's second largest city, Launceston, is the embodiment of 19th century Australia boasting the highest gathering of magnificent Victorian buildings in the country. Launceston is situated 198 kilometres north of Hobart where it lies at the junction of the Tamar, North Esk and South Esk rivers amidst lush rolling countryside. Brimming with tourist features this compact town makes exploration a breeze with dynamic museums, galleries and cafes. The city is blessed with vast streetscapes and time honoured parks with the decadent cool-climate wineries of the Tamar Valley on its doorstep.

Stroll along the waterfront taking in the rejuvenated Launceston Seaport with a selection of eateries, galleries and restaurants. Ritchies Mill and Stillwater River Cafe and Restaurant is a great stop for local produce sampling, art and design housed in a four storey grain mill. Pay homage to all things Australian at one of the best displays of history, art, science and much more at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and visitors must make a point of stopping by one of Launceston's most outstanding natural features, Cataract Gorge. Take a self guided walk along nature trails on both sides of the gorge, walk across King's Bridge with the Tamar River below, stroll the beautiful lawns of charming parkland complete with peacock's, European trees and a restaurant high up on the steep, rugged cliffs to the north of the gorge and marvel at the stunning gorge lit up at night.

Launceston features many wonderful features in the confines of this vibrant city with many just a stones throw away as well. Meet wonderful creatures at the Narawntapu National Park and the historic villages featuring mansions and farms of Evandale and Longford. The Ben Lamond National park is the place to be for rock climbers, skiers and bushwalkers. After you've worked up a nice thirst, a visit to the Boag's Brewery will be very tempting for beer lovers to learn of the brewing tradition of J Boag and Son and lets not forget a bit of a sample of the good old amber liquid. The list is long when it comes to choices for stimulating the senses, visitors will be spoilt with experiences in this gorgeous city.
