Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain - Western Wilderness - Tasmania

Cradle Mountain appears on many visitors wish lists where the unspeakable natural beauty is possibly the highlight of many holiday makers trip to Tasmania. The name, apparently, originated from the similarity of the shape of the mountain to a miner's cradle.

Make sure you visit the northern end of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park hosting one of the best views over Dove Lake across to the mountain itself. Spanning 124,942 hectares the national park boasts a number of fantastic walking trails suitable for all levels of fitness with over 25 major peaks including Mount Ossa, Tasmania's highest.

Stroll beneath a canopy of cool temperate rainforest snuggled against the mountain through the Ballroom forest on the Dove Lake Loop Track and breathe in the fresh pine scented air on the easy 20 minute Weindorfers Forest Walk.

Experienced, well equipped walkers need only apply to embark on the challenge of Australia's leading wilderness walk, the Overland Track. Strap your hiking boots on and set off on your 6-day adventure consisting of 65 kilometres of inspirational terrain leading to Lake St Clair at the southern end of the park.

Weindorfer's Chalet and the surrounding area is incredibly beautiful and should not be missed. It's easy to see why it's original owner Gustav Weindorfer devoted his existence to the preservation of the pristine Cradle Mountain area.

Check weather conditions before your visit to Cradle Mountain as the Tasmanian Highlands are often blanketed in cloud, due to the untameable weather. Check with the visitors centre at the entrance to the park for walking trail details and other activities.
