Zeehan

Zeehan - Western Wilderness - Tasmania

Just like its productive neighbours Zeehan is known for its prosperous mining history. Located 150 kilometres south-west from Burnie and 50 kilometres from Strahan, Zeehan was once nicknamed the 'Silver City of the West' after $8 million dollars of silver-lead deposits were dug up between 1893 and 1908. During its heyday the revolutionary Gaiety Theatre was built confirming the towns status as entertainment central on the west coast leading to an appearance from Dame Nellie Melba.

With the entire town being National Trust - classified, there is much to see on a stroll around this historic town with the post office, bank and St Luke's church of particular interest.

Brush up on the town's history at the West Coast Pioneer Memorial Museum including geological and train collections, marvel at the views from the summit of Mount Zeehan and satisfy your seafood craving by fishing for trout in Lake Pieman.
