Dunolly Goldfields Victoria

Dunolly - Goldfields - Victoria

The town of Dunolly is one of three towns known as the 'Golden Triangle' along with Wedderburn and Inglewood, famed for their contribution to this prosperous goldfield region. Unearthing what is believed to be the largest nugget ever found and dubbed 'Welcome Stranger' it was discovered 15 kilometres north of Dunolly, at Moliagul. Dunolly, alone, was home to the discovery of 126 gold nuggets, in a region where more gold nuggets were uncovered than any other goldfield in Australia.

Try your luck and pan for gold on one of the gold mining tours and visit the restored courthouse for some gold discovering history. Embark on the Welcome Stranger Discovery Walk at nearby Moliagul, to view the monument erected, marking the incredible discovery of the 'Welcome Stranger' nugget back in 1869. For water enthusiasts the Laanecoorie Reservoir is a great spot to get out in the boat, have a water-ski or simply float about in the water.
