Maldon

Maldon - Goldfields - Victoria

It is little wonder that Melburnians converge upon this delightful little town for a weekend break from suburban stress. Maldon is famous as Victoria's most popular gold town with its beautifully maintained shopfronts and classic buildings adorning the tree-lined main street. Step out for a self guided historic walk to discover the captivating charm of this gold rush town complete with stunning, stone cottages and 19th century shops. Better still, take a load off with a ride on the tourist steam train. Browse the galleries and relax in one of the relaxing cafes.

Visit the nearby Porcupine Township for a first hand account of a genuine gold mining village complete with mudbrick buildings transported from other goldfields. The original discovery of gold was found between Castlemaine and Bendigo in rough bushland at Porcupine diggings, now the site for the township. The village contains a blacksmith's and a doctors surgery, you can also pan for gold and make a circuit through the diggings with a ride on Little Toot train.

Visitors to Maldon can also take in spectacular views over the town at the Mount Tarrangower Lookout Tower, picnicking and fishing at Cairn Curran Reserve and guided mine tours at Carman's Tunnel Mine.
