Stawell

Stawell - Grampians - Victoria

Stawell is most recognisable as the hometown for Australia's richest running race, the Stawell Gift, however after the discovery of gold in 1853 resulting in the establishment of the town, remains a gold mining centre featuring Victoria's largest operating mine. View Stawell's gold mining heritage at the Pleasant Creek Courthouse Museum displaying 1860's photographs, gold rush artefacts, historical documents and nineteenth century costumes. Visitors can also listen to the daily operations at the Stawell Gold Mine viewing area and marvel at the sweeping 360 degree views of the surrounding area from the Big Hill Lookout. Stawell is also the gateway to the breathtaking Grampians National Park.

The famous Stawell Gift is held every Easter and has been continuously run since 1898 after local farmers and businessmen put up a prize pool of 110 pounds towards a sports day each year. The 120 metre dash for cash was born and the rest is history. Brush up on all there is to know about this prestigious running race at the Stawell Gift Hall of Fame Museum.
