Flinders Street Station Melbourne - VIC Landmarks

Landmark: Flinders Street Station
Address: Flinders Street, Melbourne, 3000, VIC

Flinders Street Station has become a famous Melbourne landmark and a symbolic meeting place for locals who know exactly where to go when someone says "Meet me under the clocks", referring to the distinctive row of clocks above the main entrance. Heralded as the busiest railway station in the southern hemisphere, Flinder Street Station is also the oldest station in Australia. Located at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets the complex stretches over two city blocks and transports over 110,000 commuters with 1,500 trains passing through this cultural icon every weekday.

Seventeen entrants put forward their plans to win a competition for the final design of the station, for the grand prize of 500 pounds, in 1902. Grand stories circulated about a plan mix up with a station being built in Bombay as they were shipped from England, however the credibility of these rumours have never been confirmed. The station was built between 1905 and 1910 where it still stands meticulously refurbished and a prominent Melbourne landmark to this day.
